Penicillin was discovered by Sir Alexander Fleming in 1928 because he forgot to clean his lab before going on vacation. Fleming noticed that one of his petri dishes that had been contaminated by bacteria had a bacteria-free spot surrounding a piece of mold. His slobbish tendencies ended up saving millions of lives.
